MUSH 02:03
Take a shot Take a shot I'm wounded Take a shot I'm wounded Pick me up I'm laughing You can see passing up on absolutely nothing Take a shot I'm waiting Over speculating I can see you running rings around me All because i'm... SLOW Take a shot I'm easy Drop me quick I'm stolen Set the pins in line before you swing and send me rolling Take a shot I'm open Grit my teeth I'm foaming Now my head is turning into mush and because i'm... SLOW All because I'm... SLOW

about

The opener of their new Click & Collect EP, ‘Wide’ captures a band whose force majeure joins the dots between their passion for strong beats and the unbridled energy of bands like Young Fathers, Snapped Ankles or Idles. With acerbic wit as Giant Boys’ secret weapon, ‘Wide’ is a slice of positive tension revealing the band to be more like the cacophonous cousins of Bass Drum of Death, Royal Blood or Slaves, via a lyrical stream of consciousness which Guy says was “spew-written” in the notes on his phone whilst fellow Giant Boys noise-maker Scottie McKnight added spontaneity with his impromptu ‘yes-no’ vocals.

Delivering brutal rhythms, fast-paced grooves and positive vibes the EP also features two further colossal pseudo-punk stompers; the adrenaline-soaked Ska-punk of ‘Mush’ - a fast post-party banger about feeling slow after one too many sherberts before calling it a night - and the ferociously gloomy ‘Black Gloss’ which is dialled down to a Radiohead groove through repetition of 2 simple lines like a painfully raw mantra.

“I find myself buying stuff all the time but know buying crap isn’t going to solve everything,” Scottie tells of Click & Collect’s satisfyingly alliterative title whilst alluding to its artwork that features a crumpled till receipt. “We wanted the cover to look 'throwaway' as well as simple. With literally a few clicks you can listen to absolutely anything these days, however this is no criticism; we love how easily music can be streamed – so it’s just more of a nod to the way things are. The EP title was so blatant, so its cover had to be too.”

Staunchly DIY, the band recorded the Click & Collect EP themselves at their base in Salford’s Blueprint studios in their ruthless one-take style, with each track mixed and mastered by Danny Evans (Elbow, Fingathing, Rae & Christian). Layering beats by dance music methods and manipulation, fun is at the heart of Giant Boys’ recipe and behind the studio door, Guy dances to Scottie’s yelped lyrics as the pair flex their visceral reverb and appetite for industrial stoner rock refrains.

Giant Boys Manchester, UK

Pseudo Punk Karoke

Living by their own set of rules, Garage-rock rogues Scottie McKnight and Guy Connor deliver nothing but brutal rhythms, fast-paced grooves and positive vibes. Offering liberation from the daily grind with the rampant power of their prolific DIY set-up, they could be Royal Blood or Slaves’ more cacophonous cousins. ... more
